Glasgow 2026: Didih Credits NSC Support as Team Nigeria Targets Weightlifting Medals

Posted : 16 July 2026

With seven days remaining before the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth weightlifting champion Onome Omolola Didih has praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for providing Team Nigeria with the support needed to compete for medals on the biggest stage.

Didih, one of Nigeria's strongest medal contenders in weightlifting, said the quality of preparations in both Nigeria and the pre-Games camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, has left the athletes confident and fully focused ahead of the competition.

"I am living my dreams representing Nigeria, and I am grateful for the opportunity. The National Sports Commission has helped us prepare adequately, while the Weightlifting Federation has continued to encourage and support us throughout this journey," Didih said.

"Our camping, both in Nigeria and here in Aberdeen, has been top-notch. The environment has been serene and has allowed us to remain focused on our training. The training facilities have everything we need, and we are grateful to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their support."

The African record holder heads into the Games with an impressive record of success. She placed fourth at the 2024 World Weightlifting Championships before dominating the women's 53kg category at the 2025 African Weightlifting Championships in Mauritius, where she won three gold medals with lifts of 92kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 203kg.

She maintained her continental supremacy at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Egypt, again sweeping all three gold medals in the 53kg class after lifting 87kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 192kg.

Didih also captured gold at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India, last summer, reinforcing her credentials as one of Team Nigeria's leading medal prospects for Glasgow 2026.

The champion called on Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they prepare to represent the country at the Games.

"We urge Nigerians to keep praying for us and cheering us on as we compete for the country. We will do all we can to make them proud and, with their support, nothing is impossible," she said.

Team Nigeria is currently completing its final preparations in Aberdeen ahead of the Opening Ceremony on July 23, with athletes aiming to add to the nation's rich medal-winning legacy at the Commonwealth Games.

The team's preparations and the confidence expressed by Didih reflect Nigeria's determination to challenge for honours in Glasgow, with the weightlifting squad hoping to convert its strong form into another successful Commonwealth Games campaign.
