Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Begin with Bowls and Historic Indoor Opening Ceremony

The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially begin on Thursday, July 23, with Glasgow hosting the opening day of an 11-day sporting festival featuring more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories. The Games will run until August 2, with 215 gold medals to be contested across 10 sports.

Competition starts with Bowls and Para Bowls at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), making history as both events are staged indoors for the first time at a Commonwealth Games. The new format is expected to provide a closer and more engaging experience for athletes and spectators while showcasing one of the Games' traditional sports in a modern setting.

Several established stars headline the opening day's Bowls action. Australia's Aaron Wilson, who won the men's singles titles at the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games, returns in search of another medal. Scotland's reigning world champion Jason Banks will also be among the favourites competing on home soil.

The women's competition features another experienced Australian in Kelsey Cottrell, one of the sport's most decorated Commonwealth Games athletes. Traditional powerhouses Australia, Scotland and England are again expected to face strong competition from nations including New Zealand, South Africa and India.

Para Bowls also makes its Commonwealth Games debut after being fully integrated into the programme. Athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments will compete alongside the able-bodied events, highlighting the Games' commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity across elite sport.

Attention will then shift to the OVO Hydro, where Glasgow will stage a historic Opening Ceremony. For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, the ceremony will take place entirely inside an indoor arena, creating an immersive experience for spectators.

Organisers have kept most details of the ceremony confidential, but fans can expect live music, dance performances, spectacular visual displays and the traditional Parade of Nations featuring all 74 competing teams. The ceremony will officially open the Games and celebrate Scotland's culture while welcoming athletes from across the Commonwealth.

The sporting programme expands significantly on Friday, July 24, with events beginning in swimming, artistic gymnastics, boxing, 3x3 basketball and para powerlifting. The competition is expected to feature numerous Olympic, Paralympic and world champions, alongside defending Commonwealth Games gold medallists.

Glasgow previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and returns as host city with a streamlined programme designed to deliver high-quality competition across multiple venues. Over the next 11 days, athletes will compete for medals while national teams battle for supremacy on the overall medal table.
