Glasgow 2026 Begins as Team Nigeria Launches Historic 20th Commonwealth Games Campaign

The stage is set for Team Nigeria to begin its quest for medals and glory as the 23rd Commonwealth Games officially open on Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Games, scheduled to run from July 23 to Aug. 2, will see Nigeria make its 20th appearance at the Commonwealth Games, exactly 76 years after the country's debut at the Auckland 1950 Games in New Zealand.

From that modest beginning, Nigeria has established itself as one of the Commonwealth's leading sporting nations, producing champions in athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, para sports, and several other disciplines.

Team Nigeria's 74 athletes have completed their arrival in Glasgow and are fully settled in the Games Village ahead of the commencement of competition.

The Nigerian delegation is led by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and the Commission's Director-General, Bukola Olopade.

Also accompanying the contingent are Commonwealth Games Ambassadors, former NSC Directors-General Gbenga Elegbeleye and Alhassan Yakmut, renowned sports administrator Dr. Amos Adamu, and veteran broadcaster Victor Ilore.

Attention will, however, first shift to the colourful Opening Ceremony at the OVO Hydro, where Nigerian athletes will proudly parade in eye-catching green-and-white traditional ceremonial attire that reflects the country's rich cultural heritage.

The ceremony is expected to provide a fitting showcase of Scotland's culture and creativity, featuring performances by acclaimed singer-songwriters KT Tunstall, Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, Nathan Evans, SAINT PHNX, and electronic folk duo Valtos, who will accompany the Parade of Nations.

The King's Baton Relay will also conclude during the ceremony, while His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla are expected to officially declare the Games open.

Glasgow 2026 brings together about 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports at various venues across the Scottish city.

First staged in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930 with just 11 participating nations, the Commonwealth Games has grown into one of the world's foremost multi-sport events, celebrating excellence, friendship, and unity.

For Team Nigeria, this edition presents another opportunity to reinforce its impressive Commonwealth Games legacy.

With months of intensive preparations, improved athlete welfare programmes introduced by the NSC, and a squad comprising world champions, Paralympic champions, Commonwealth champions, and exciting young talents, Nigeria will be aiming for another successful outing on one of international sport's biggest stages.

As competition gets underway, Team Nigeria will be looking to build on its proud Commonwealth Games tradition with strong performances across multiple sports. The Glasgow Games provide another platform for Nigerian athletes to showcase their talent and compete for medals on the international stage.
