Glasgow 2026 Beckons as Team Nigeria Eyes Medal Haul Across Multiple Sports

With the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games set to begin in less than 24 hours, Team Nigeria is poised to begin its quest for medals, buoyed by a blend of world champions, Paralympic gold medallists, record holders, and emerging stars across several sports.

The Nigerian contingent has completed its high-performance training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, and has now settled into the Games Village, while the national 3x3 basketball team has arrived from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to complete the country's delegation.

Nigeria's campaign gets underway on Friday, July 24, with the Para Powerlifting team expected to provide an early medal boost.

Leading the challenge is Team Nigeria captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who enters the Games as one of the country's brightest medal prospects. The reigning Commonwealth champion, two-time Paralympic gold medallist, four-time world champion, and multiple world record holder will be aiming to defend the title she won in Birmingham.

Joining her is reigning world champion Rita Ferdinand, who has enjoyed an exceptional season. The Nigerian recently equalled the women's world record with a 154kg lift at the African Open Championships in Oran, Algeria, where she also established a new African record in the women's up to 79kg category.

On the track, Nigeria will rely on the blistering speed of Kayinsola Ajayi, whose remarkable 2026 campaign has established him among the world's elite sprinters.

The Auburn University athlete captured both the NCAA Indoor 60m and Outdoor 100m titles before equalling the Nigerian 100m record of 9.84 seconds. He also announced himself on the international circuit with victories over reigning world champion Oblique Seville at both the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and the London Diamond League.

Another major attraction for Team Nigeria is world record holder Tobi Amusan, who is chasing a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games title in the women's 100m hurdles.

Amusan has rediscovered top form this season, winning Diamond League meetings in Rabat and Paris, claiming another African title, and strengthening her status as one of the favourites for gold in Glasgow.

Nigeria's hopes in the field events will rest largely on African record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, whose consistent performances at global championships have made him one of Africa's leading shot put athletes.

The experienced thrower heads to Glasgow seeking to convert his impressive international pedigree into another major medal for Nigeria.

In boxing, Patricia Mbata will make her Commonwealth Games debut after an impressive rise since switching allegiance to Nigeria.

The African Games champion secured her place in Team Nigeria by defeating national champion Blessing Orakwe at the national trials and will be hoping to add a Commonwealth medal to her growing list of achievements.

Beyond the athletes, confidence within the Nigerian camp has been boosted by a renewed focus on athlete welfare introduced by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Under the leadership of Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, the Commission significantly increased athletes' daily allowances, camping allowances, and travel support while introducing enhanced medal incentives.

Gold medallists stand to earn up to 8,000 dollars in combined rewards and bonuses, while every athlete and official has received ₦500,000 in travel support as part of the Commission's athlete-first policy.

Armed with world champions, Paralympic champions, Diamond League winners, and African champions, Team Nigeria heads into Glasgow optimistic about delivering another memorable Commonwealth Games campaign.

As competition begins, the country's blend of experienced champions and emerging talents will be looking to translate months of preparation into podium finishes and reinforce Nigeria's reputation as one of the Commonwealth's leading sporting nations.
