Glasgow 2026: Adama Powers Into Commonwealth Games 50m Freestyle Semi-Finals

Nigeria's Abduljabar Adama delivered a composed and powerful swim to book a place in the men's 50m freestyle semi-finals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, ensuring the country's presence remains alive in the swimming competition.

Racing in a stacked Heat 7 at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Adama held his own against a strong field that featured Australia's Flynn Southam, England's Jacob Mills, Canada's Antoine Sauvé, and Northern Ireland's Matthew Hamilton. His impressive finish earned him one of the qualifying spots for the semi-finals, making him Nigeria's sole survivor in the event.

While Adama celebrated his progression, teammate Clinton Opute bowed out after competing in Heat 8. Opute faced formidable opposition, including Australia's Jamie Jack, South Africa's Michael Houlie, The Bahamas' Lamar Taylor, and Fiji's Hansel McCaig, but his performance fell short of securing a semi-final berth.

Adama's latest achievement adds to the growing reputation of the young Nigerian sprint specialist, who has already made headlines by setting the African junior record in the 50m freestyle. His qualification further highlights his emergence as one of the continent's most promising swimming talents.

The Nigerian camp welcomed the result with excitement, with officials and teammates optimistic that Adama can continue his impressive run when he returns to the pool for the semi-finals later on Day Two.

His advancement also provides another encouraging moment for Team Nigeria following its impressive start to the Games, where the nation's para powerlifters delivered a strong medal-winning performance on the opening day.
