Giro d’Italia 2027: Organisers Unveil Challenging Route Featuring Three Motor Racing Circuits

Posted : 04 November 2026

The organisers of the Giro d’Italia have announced a demanding route for the race’s 110th edition, featuring three famous motor racing circuits, two individual time trials and several difficult mountain stages.

The race will begin in Trieste on May 8 and conclude in Rome on May 30. Riders will face a route covering more than 3,400 kilometres, with over 50,000 metres of climbing as they compete to succeed defending champion Jonas Vingegaard.

The opening stages are expected to offer opportunities for sprinters and breakaway specialists before the general classification battle intensifies. One of the early highlights will be a 19.6-kilometre uphill individual time trial from Sulmona to Campo di Giove, which could create significant gaps between the leading contenders.

The route also includes visits to three motorsport venues: the Misano circuit, the Mugello circuit and Monza’s Autodromo Nazionale. The fourth stage will finish at Misano on May 11, while the race will pass through Mugello during the second week. A 37.3-kilometre time trial from Monza to Milan will provide another important test on May 23.

The decisive moments are expected during the final week, when the riders face some of Italy’s most demanding climbs. Stage 16 from Sondrio to Aprica will feature two ascents of the Passo del Mortirolo and a return to the 2,618-metre Passo di Gavia, which will serve as the race’s highest point. The mountain challenges continue with a summit finish at Madonna di Campiglio before the penultimate stage concludes atop the legendary Monte Zoncolan.

After two consecutive editions that began outside Italy, the Giro will return to Italian roads for its opening stage. However, the race will cross into Slovenia on the second day, with the peloton travelling from Ljubljana to Koper. Slovenia is home to Tadej Pogačar, although his participation is uncertain as he is expected to prioritise his Tour de France ambitions.

Giro d’Italia Women also set for demanding route

The 2027 Giro d’Italia Women will run from May 29 to June 6, beginning in Viareggio and finishing with the challenging Monte Bianco Stage in the Aosta Valley. The nine-stage event will cover 1,132 kilometres and feature 17,450 metres of elevation gain.

The women’s race includes two major summit finishes, at Passo della Presolana and Madesimo-Valle Spluga. Its closing weekend will be particularly important, with an 11-kilometre uphill individual time trial on June 5 followed by the 132-kilometre Alpine finale the next day. These stages are expected to play a decisive role in determining who succeeds Demi Vollering as champion.
