Gilbert, Wilson Showcase Stellar Performance, Tied at 8-8 in World Championship Semi-Final

Posted : 03 May 2024

David Gilbert and Kyren Wilson displayed exceptional skill in their Cazoo World Championship semi-final, tallying two centuries and four breaks over 50 in a riveting session that ended with the score tied at 8-8.

The intense battle unfolded with both players entering the arena on Friday morning deadlocked at 4-4, and they remained evenly matched, sharing the eight frames to maintain parity.

The anticipation builds as they gear up for another eight frames scheduled for the evening, with the decisive session set for Saturday afternoon, determining who advances to the final against Stuart Bingham or Jak Jones, with the first to 17 frames securing victory.

Wilson, ranked highest in the tournament at number 12, boasts previous Crucible experience with this being his fourth semi-final appearance and having reached the final once before in 2020, where he fell short against Ronnie O'Sullivan.

In contrast, Gilbert, ranked 31st globally, has only reached the semi-finals once in 2019, narrowly missing out on a final berth with a 17-16 defeat to John Higgins.

The session showcased remarkable exchanges, with Wilson seizing the opening frame with a break of 70, followed by Gilbert's valiant effort to level the score at 5-5 with a run of 58.

The momentum swung back and forth, highlighted by Gilbert's stunning century to equalize at 6-6, and Wilson's resilient response with breaks of 54 and 79 to momentarily take the lead.

Gilbert's dominance was evident in the final frame of the session as he capitalized on Wilson's miss, securing his ninth Crucible century this year, showcasing his prowess on the green baize.
