Ghana Women endured a difficult outing on Saturday, falling to a heavy 99-run defeat against South Africa in the ongoing Nigeria Fifth Women's Invitational T20I tournament in Lagos.
The match, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval, saw Ghana unable to match the intensity and composure of a well-drilled South African side.
Chasing a challenging target of 169, Ghana found themselves under early pressure and never quite recovered. Despite a brief effort from Kate Awuah, who managed 12 runs, the batting lineup struggled to build meaningful partnerships and was eventually dismissed for 69 in 19.3 overs.
South Africa's bowling unit proved too strong, with Mieke Van Voorst delivering a standout performance.
The all-rounder tore through Ghana's batting with remarkable figures of 3 wickets for just 1 run, including a maiden over. Ziya Mohanlall also played a key role, picking up 2 wickets for 19 runs.
Earlier in the match, South Africa had laid a solid foundation with the bat after being put in to bat. Recovering from early setbacks, they posted 168 for 4 in their 20 overs.
Van Voorst led the charge with a composed 50 off 34 balls, while Siphokuhle Masilela added a steady 37 off 44 balls. Contributions from Rethabile Nthoba and Jae Leigh Finalder further strengthened the innings.
Ghana's bowling highlight came through Kate Awuah, who returned figures of 2 for 22, but it was not enough to contain the opposition.
Van Voorst's outstanding all-round display earned her the Player of the Match award, capping a dominant performance by South Africa as the tournament action continues in Nigeria.
