Ghana’s Vincent Torgah defeated Nigeria’s Kamalu Bako in a sudden-death playoff to win the 2026 Lakowe Lakes Golf Classic on Sunday. The victory earned Torgah the Sunshine Development Tour title and a brand-new electric car provided by CIG Motors.
The $50,000 tournament was played at the par-72 Lakowe Lakes Championship Course in Lagos. The event was supported by Oando, CIG Motors, ARM and Providus Unity Bank.
Torgah appeared set for a comfortable finish after entering the final round with an advantage. However, Bako produced one of the best rounds of the tournament to force the contest into extra holes.
The Nigerian carded a six-under-par 66, making eight birdies and two bogeys. His strong putting erased Torgah’s advantage and brought the two golfers level at the top of the leaderboard.
“I wished I could have executed the sudden death play better, but I was happy with my round where I putted well and was able to produce a six under par that gave me the chance at the title,” Bako said.
Torgah responded with a composed final-round 70 to finish the regulation rounds at three-under-par. He had earlier posted rounds of 70 and 71 before matching his opening-round score in the final round.
The Ghanaian then held his nerve during the playoff to deny Bako and claim the championship. Bako settled for second place after pushing the eventual winner throughout the final day.
Rwanda’s Celestine Nsanzuwera, who led after the opening day, recovered strongly to finish joint third with Ezekiel Afisco. Both players ended the tournament at two-under-par.
The tournament represented a major milestone for the Sunshine Development Tour. It was the first SDT event staged in West Africa and provided regional professionals with access to high-level competition and Official World Golf Ranking points.
SDT Chief Executive Officer David Ndungu said the tournament demonstrated the quality of talent in West African professional golf. He added that the tour’s presence in the region could help create more opportunities and support the growth of the sport.
Lakowe Lakes Golf Manager Femi Olagbenro also reaffirmed the club’s commitment to developing professional golf. He said stronger corporate partnerships and sponsorship initiatives would be important to sustaining the sport in Nigeria and across the region.
