GCI Old Boys Secure 2026 CCC League Title with Dominant Victory Over Rising Stars

Posted : 21 April 2026

Government College Ibadan (GCI) Old Boys Association Cricket Club produced a clinical performance to win the 2026 Club Cricket Committee (CCC) Lagos Premier League. They defeated the defending champions, Rising Stars Cricket Club, by 117 runs in a one-sided final held at the Tafawa Balewa Square Oval.

GCI Old Boys won the toss and elected to bat first in the high-stakes title decider. This tactical decision proved successful as they reached a formidable total of 180 runs for the loss of six wickets.

The innings was defined by a stellar performance from Sylvester Okpe, who captains the national team, the Yellow Greens. Okpe played a decisive knock of 86 runs from just 46 deliveries; his aggressive display included nine boundaries and four sixes.

Vincent Adewoye provided crucial support at the other end to help build the massive total. Adewoye contributed a quick-fire 55 runs off 32 balls to ensure GCI set a target that put Rising Stars under immediate pressure.

The Rising Stars' response never gained momentum as they struggled against a disciplined bowling attack. They were eventually bowled out for a meager 63 runs in 16.1 overs, failing to build any significant partnerships.

Chimezie Onwuzulike was the only batter to offer much resistance, scoring 14 runs from 13 balls. His effort was the highest individual score in an innings that saw the rest of the lineup collapse.

Sylvester Okpe followed up his batting masterclass by dominating with the ball as well. He took four wickets to dismantle the middle and lower order of the Rising Stars' batting lineup.

The victory marks a shift in the hierarchy of the CCC Lagos Premier League. By dethroning the previous champions so convincingly, GCI Old Boys have reaffirmed their status as a powerhouse in Nigerian domestic cricket.

The CCC League continues to serve as a vital development platform for cricketers in the region. This result follows the recent 40-over final, where Island Titans Cricket Club defeated Ibeju Lekki Cricket Club by 67 runs at the University of Lagos.
