Ganna Wins Shortened Vuelta Stage 18

Posted : 12 September 2025

Filippo Ganna powered to victory in Stage 18 of the Vuelta a España on Thursday, winning the individual time trial that was shortened due to security concerns.

The Italian rider, representing Ineos Grenadiers, clocked a time of exactly 13 minutes on the revised 12.2km course in Valladolid. It marked his second career stage victory at the Vuelta and his ninth overall in a grand tour.

Race organizers had announced on Wednesday that the original 27km route would be cut by 15km following a series of pro-Palestinian protests that had disrupted earlier stages. Spanish authorities deployed heavy police presence along the course, and two demonstrators attempting to cross barriers were arrested.

Although hundreds of protestors lined the route, waving flags and jeering Israel-Premier Tech riders, the race itself proceeded without incident.

Ganna narrowly edged out Australian Jay Vine, who finished one second behind, while João Almeida claimed third place.

Despite finishing ninth, race leader Jonas Vingegaard held on to the red jersey but saw his overall advantage reduced to 40 seconds after Almeida gained 10 seconds.

With just two competitive stages left before Sunday’s ceremonial finish in Madrid, the Dane remains in pole position.

Heightened security is expected to continue over the final weekend of the race, particularly in Madrid, where the concluding stage poses another potential flashpoint. The protests reflect Spain’s strong pro-Palestinian stance under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, which has called for Israeli teams to face similar bans to those imposed on Russian clubs after the invasion of Ukraine.
