Furyk Demands More from Team USA Ahead of 2027 Ryder Cup

Posted : 07 October 2026

United States Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has promised major changes as he prepares his team for next year’s contest at Adare Manor in Ireland. With the Americans still waiting for their first victory on European soil since 1993, Furyk says his players must make greater efforts than previous US teams.

Furyk, who was also captain when the United States lost to Europe in Paris in 2018, said his experiences from that defeat and other team competitions had influenced his approach. He has already altered the qualification system and added an analytics team as part of a wider plan to strengthen the American setup.

One of the biggest concerns is the United States’ recent struggles in foursomes, or alternate-shot golf. The Americans have won only eight of 34 points across their last four Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup appearances, including just three of 16 against European opposition in the Ryder Cup.

Furyk believes the poor record cannot simply be dismissed as an unfortunate trend. He said the Americans need to improve both their player pairings and their preparation for the format, with a particular focus on ensuring players become more comfortable with the demands of alternate-shot golf.

The captain also wants his potential players to visit Adare Manor before the tournament. Furyk expects the Americans to make the effort to familiarise themselves with the course, believing that early preparation will help the team adapt to the venue and build stronger relationships.

Europe captain Luke Donald, meanwhile, is targeting an unprecedented third consecutive Ryder Cup victory as captain. Having guided Europe to triumphs in Rome and at Bethpage, Donald acknowledged the strength of the American squad and said he would consider changes to his team-building approach for the Ireland contest.

The 2027 Ryder Cup will take place at Adare Manor from September 17-19. Furyk accepts that the United States face a difficult challenge but believes better preparation, stronger pairings and a more effective approach to foursomes can help end their long wait for an away victory.
