Friends and associates of the late Nigerian financial expert Olabode Agusto will gather at Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos on Thursday, October 22, for a memorial charity golf tournament organised by the Friends of Bode Agusto Foundation (FOBA).
The event will celebrate Agusto’s professional achievements, personal relationships and commitment to initiatives that improve lives. More than 120 golfers are expected to participate, reflecting the strong support the tournament has received from the golfing community and his associates.
Tony Onwu, chairman of the organising committee and a former captain of the golf section at Ikoyi Club 1938, said the response demonstrated the respect Agusto earned during his lifetime.
Onwu noted that the tournament provides an opportunity to remember Agusto through a sport and community he valued. He also highlighted the lasting relationships he built beyond his professional career.
Agusto was one of Nigeria’s prominent financial and economic experts. He served as the federation’s pioneer budget director from 2003 to 2007 and founded Agusto & Co., recognised as Nigeria’s first credit rating agency.
Through his work, he contributed to the development of financial analysis, fiscal discipline and corporate governance in the country. His professional influence extended across the financial services sector and public institutions.
The memorial tournament has attracted support from several leading organisations. They include the Central Bank of Nigeria, Zenith Bank, Investment One, FSDH Merchant Bank, Nigeria Exchange Group, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank Group, ARM HoldCo, PwC Nigeria and Agusto & Co.
The involvement of these institutions reflects the broad professional network associated with Agusto and the importance of preserving his contributions to Nigeria’s economic development.
Tayo Babalakin, chairman of the FOBA Management Committee, said the foundation aims to sustain Agusto’s legacy through programmes that reflect his values and areas of interest.
He explained that the foundation focuses on education, healthcare, youth empowerment, sports development and community-building initiatives. According to Babalakin, supporting these causes offers a practical way to honour Agusto’s memory while creating opportunities for others.
The golf tournament combines remembrance with charitable giving, bringing together participants from different professional backgrounds around a shared sporting interest.
With more than 120 golfers expected to take part, organisers anticipate a strong turnout despite the event being held on a weekday. The gathering will also provide an opportunity for friends, colleagues and associates to celebrate Agusto’s life and contributions.
The initiative highlights how sporting events can bring communities together while supporting charitable causes. For FOBA, the tournament forms part of a broader effort to ensure that Agusto’s commitment to social development continues to benefit future generations.
