French Rugby prepares for Six Nations challenge without captain Antoine Dupont

Posted : 31 January 2024

Coach Fabien Galthie faces the challenge of leading the French rugby team in the Six Nations without captain Antoine Dupont, who opted to miss the tournament to prepare for the Paris Olympic Games. Gregory Alldritt, La Rochelle's No 8, has been selected as the new captain for the Six Nations.

Maxime Lucu replaces Dupont in the crucial scrum-half position, acknowledging the unique challenge of playing behind a player of Dupont's caliber. Lucu, who has been part of the team since November 2021, emphasizes the need to bring his own strengths to the role and contribute meaningfully to the team's success.

The absence of Dupont, known for his influential on-field presence and off-field popularity, presents an opportunity for other players to step up and take responsibility. Lucu, likely to partner with Matthieu Jalibert, shares that on the field, their dynamic can be intense but productive, creating a partnership akin to an "old couple without the monotony." Alldritt, who is fluent in English and credited Ronan O'Gara for shaping his captaincy style, is described as demanding accuracy and application while maintaining a smile.

Dupont's absence provides a chance for other players, including Damian Penaud, Matthieu Jalibert, Charles Ollivon, Julien Marchand, and Peato Mauvaka, to showcase their skills and initiative in the game plan.

The team aims to demonstrate that their success is not solely reliant on Dupont's X-Factor, encouraging players to take responsibility and contribute to the overall strategy. The Six Nations will be a testing ground for the team's resilience and ability to adapt in the absence of their star player.
