Two former Springbok Women’s players, Laurian Johannes-Haupt and Zenay Jordaan, are among the participants set to complete the World Rugby Level 3 Coaching Course next week in Cape Town.
The programme, hosted by SA Rugby’s Participation and Development Department, marks the second phase of a regional initiative aimed at expanding the pool of elite-qualified coaches across Southern Africa.
This latest phase will bring together coaches from South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia, and Namibia, following the initial session held in November 2024. The initiative places special emphasis on developing and empowering women coaches in the region.
Johannes-Haupt, currently serving as one of the assistant coaches for the Springbok Women, and Jordaan—who joined the team at the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England as part of World Rugby’s Gallagher High Performance Academy—are both continuing to advance their professional coaching credentials through the course.
They will be joined by a diverse group of coaches drawn from provincial rugby, the FNB Varsity Cup, and the Pick n Pay Gold Cup, as well as former provincial, national, and international players such as Mziwakhe Nkosi, JP Pietersen, Philip Lemmer, Alshaun Bock, Edgar Marutlulle, and Brendell Brandt.
As part of the programme, participants will present their Periodised Season Plans, developed after the first phase and implemented during the 2025 season. They will also take part in a series of workshops covering key non-technical areas of coaching, including Player Welfare, Mental Wellness, Tournament Logistics, Sports Science, Competition Regulations, and Media Relations.
This initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening coaching expertise and promoting greater inclusion and professional growth within rugby across the African continent.
