Folashade Oluwafemiayo Named Team Nigeria Captain for 2026 Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission has officially named legendary para-powerlifter Folashade Oluwafemiayo as the overall captain for Team Nigeria ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The highly anticipated multi-sport showpiece is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The sporting body revealed that her appointment was driven by a commitment to elite leadership. Management selected an athlete whose incredible achievements, unwavering professionalism, and stellar character truly represent the highest values of the nation.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, strongly emphasized that this crucial selection was based purely on international merit. He praised her standard of excellence and noted that her continuous dedication makes her a perfect model for the entire delegation.

Olopade stated that Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice because she has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, deep resilience, and athletic excellence throughout her distinguished career. He added that her unique leadership qualities and fierce winning mentality will serve as a massive inspiration to every single athlete representing the country.

The veteran powerlifter boasts an incredible sporting resume that firmly establishes her as one of Africa's most decorated para-athletes. She is a celebrated two-time Paralympic gold medalist and a dominant four-time world champion in her weight category.

Her appointment is expected to provide a significant psychological boost to the Nigerian contingent as they finalize training preparations. Nigeria looks to improve on previous international outings and secure a major medal haul across various sporting events in Scotland.
