Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have reached the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco after defeating Brazil 3-1 in their semi-final encounter.
The Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive second-half performance to overcome their South American opponents and move within one victory of claiming their first-ever title in the competition.
Both teams struggled to find the breakthrough during a closely contested first half. However, Nigeria returned from the interval with greater attacking intent and eventually took control of the encounter.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, giving the Flamingos a deserved advantage.
Nigeria continued to press forward, and Awawu Bashiru doubled the lead in the 71st minute with an important finish that strengthened the team's position.
Bashiru completed her brace in the 80th minute, putting Nigeria firmly in control at 3-0 and leaving Brazil with a difficult task in the closing stages.
Brazil managed to pull one goal back through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, but the Flamingos maintained their advantage to secure a memorable 3-1 victory.
The result represents a major milestone for Nigerian women's youth football. The Flamingos have reached their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup final, surpassing their previous best finish of third place at the 2022 tournament in India.
Their achievement also reinforces Nigeria's reputation as one of Africa's leading nations in women's youth football, following several impressive performances at continental and global competitions.
Head coach Akeem Busari and his technical crew will now turn their attention to preparing the team for the biggest match of their campaign.
Nigeria will face Japan in Saturday's final, scheduled for November 7 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
Japan secured their place in the championship match after defeating defending champions North Korea 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in their semi-final encounter.
The Japanese side will present a difficult challenge, but Nigeria will approach the contest with confidence after their convincing performance against Brazil.
The Flamingos now have an opportunity to make history by becoming the first Nigerian team to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. A victory would also deliver Nigeria its first global title in women's football at this age level.
