Five Nigerian Golfers Compete at World Schools Games in Scotland

Five young Nigerian golfers represented the country at the World Schools Games Golf Championships in St Andrews, Scotland, from September 14 to 16, 2026.

The Nigerian contingent featured Mayomile Orungbeja of St. Gregory’s College, Tiaraoluwa Ahmadu of St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, Fireyimi Aina of Lagos Preparatory School, Ikoyi, Toluwalashe Balogun of Lagoon Schools, Lekki, and Melvin Strasser of Meadow Hall School, Lekki.

The championship brought together junior golfers from different countries and gave the Nigerian players an opportunity to compete outside Africa. The event also provided valuable experience against international opposition at school level.

Nigeria recorded notable performances across the Junior Boys and Junior Girls categories. Balogun finished as runner-up in the Junior Girls category, while Ahmadu secured a top-five finish.

Orungbeja also produced a strong showing, finishing inside the top 10 in the Junior Boys category. The results provided an encouraging display of the talent emerging within Nigeria’s junior golf system.

Team Coordinator Oluseyi Badmos of 2AT Limited highlighted the importance of international competition in developing young athletes.

“International exposure is an important part of developing young athletes,” Badmos said. He added that competitions of this nature allow young players to compete, learn, build confidence and understand the demands of performing at a higher level.

The participation is linked to the Let’s Play Golf in Schools initiative operated by 2AT Limited. The grassroots programme is designed to introduce golf to schoolchildren and create a pathway towards structured training and competitive participation.

Badmos also acknowledged the Lagos State Government, through the State Universal Basic Education Board, for supporting efforts to introduce golf to primary school pupils across the state.

He stressed that continued cooperation between government agencies, schools, parents, golf organisations and other stakeholders will be important for expanding access to the sport. Such partnerships can also help talented young players progress from school programmes into national and international competition.

The appearance in St Andrews marks a significant international experience for the five Nigerian golfers. Their performances also provide another indication of the developing depth of junior golf talent in the country.
