Matt Fitzpatrick and Michael Thorbjornsen will head into a marathon final day of the Genesis Scottish Open tied for the lead after persistent sea fog repeatedly interrupted play during the third round at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick. The pair were locked at 11-under par when play was suspended, setting up an exciting finish on Sunday.
England's Fitzpatrick surged into contention with an impressive run of five birdies over his opening eight holes before thick coastal fog, known locally as "haar," forced officials to suspend play twice. American Thorbjornsen matched the lead after another composed display, continuing his impressive week in Scotland.
Tournament officials first halted play for more than two hours in the morning due to poor visibility before a second bank of fog rolled across the course late in the afternoon, bringing play to an early end. As a result, 22 players will have to complete their third rounds on Sunday morning before the final round begins.
A large group of players remains firmly in contention. Americans Johnny Keefer, Wyndham Clark and Kevin Roy, defending champion Chris Gotterup, Australia's Min Woo Lee and England's Jordan Smith were all one shot behind the leaders at 10-under par. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre also stayed within striking distance at nine under as he bids to challenge in front of home fans.
Rory McIlroy, who began the day among the leaders, slipped down the leaderboard after struggling to build momentum before play was suspended. The Northern Irishman now faces an uphill battle if he is to mount a successful title challenge on the final day.
The weather delays have created a demanding schedule, with players expected to complete the remainder of the third round before immediately beginning the decisive final round. The Scottish Open serves as the final tune-up event ahead of next week's Open Championship, adding further significance to Sunday's finish.
With the leaderboard tightly packed and weather conditions still uncertain, the tournament remains wide open as Fitzpatrick chases another DP World Tour victory while Thorbjornsen seeks the biggest title of his professional career.
