Fitzpatrick Resists Scheffler Surge to Retain Three-Shot Lead at RBC Heritage

Posted : 19 April 2026

Matt Fitzpatrick showed remarkable resilience during the third round of the 2026 RBC Heritage, firing a 3-under 68 to stay three strokes clear of the field. Despite an early stumble that saw his lead evaporate, the Englishman regained his composure on the back nine at Hilton Head Island. Fitzpatrick’s round was defined by a spectacular late surge, highlighted by a chip-in eagle on the par-5 15th hole. This clutch performance allowed him to reach 17-under par overall as he chases his second title at Harbour Town.

The day began with significant pressure from World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who started the round seven shots back. Scheffler carded a magnificent 7-under 64, birdying five of his first six holes to briefly seize a share of the lead. The American standout showcased the same clinical form that nearly saw him snatch the Masters title just one week prior. Although he cooled off mid-round, late birdies on the 17th and 18th holes ensured he would join Fitzpatrick in Sunday's final pairing.

Fitzpatrick’s front nine was uncharacteristically loose, featuring bogeys on the first and third holes that invited the chasing pack into the fray. However, a 338-yard drive on the ninth green sparked a momentum shift that saved his tournament hopes. He followed this with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 14th before the decisive eagle on the 15th restored his cushion. "It is always satisfying when you can turn it around, particularly if you have not played that well," Fitzpatrick noted after his round.

Beyond the lead duo, the leaderboard remains crowded with several elite contenders within striking distance. Brian Harman surged into a tie for third at 13-under par after recording a career-best 63 at this venue. He sits alongside Si Woo Kim and Sepp Straka, both of whom remain dangerous threats if the leaders falter. Ludvig Aberg and Patrick Cantlay are also looming at 12-under, requiring aggressive final rounds to bridge the five-shot gap to the top.

The stage is now set for a heavyweight final-round showdown between two of the game’s most consistent performers. Fitzpatrick holds the statistical advantage, but Scheffler’s ability to post low scores without taking excessive risks makes him a formidable shadow. With the wind expected to be a factor during the finale, the leader must balance aggression with the defensive play required to hold off the world’s top-ranked player.
