England’s Matt Fitzpatrick produced a composed and clutch performance to defeat world number one Scottie Scheffler in a play-off and win the RBC Heritage in South Carolina. The victory marked his second PGA Tour title in just over a month, highlighting a strong run of form for the 31-year-old.
Fitzpatrick entered the final round with a three-shot advantage after an impressive build-up, having already secured victory at the Valspar Championship in March. He looked in control for much of the round, playing his opening 17 holes steadily and remaining bogey-free as he attempted to close out the tournament in regulation play.
However, drama unfolded on the 18th hole when Fitzpatrick’s bogey opened the door for Scheffler to force a play-off. The American world number one had applied pressure throughout the final round and managed to draw level at the top as both players headed to extra holes after finishing regulation tied.
In the play-off, Fitzpatrick quickly regained composure. He delivered a superb approach shot before calmly sinking the decisive birdie putt, sealing a memorable victory over the top-ranked player in the world. Reflecting on the win, Fitzpatrick described the moment as special, particularly after going head-to-head with Scheffler in such a high-pressure finish.
Scheffler, meanwhile, was left with another runner-up finish despite a strong closing round. He acknowledged Fitzpatrick’s consistency and ability to deliver under pressure, admitting that the Englishman deserved the win after capitalising on key moments when it mattered most.
South Korea’s Si-woo Kim finished third, just two shots behind the leading pair after a solid final round, rounding off a competitive leaderboard in South Carolina.
