The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department Steering Committee has officially commenced its extensive verification exercise for administrative hopefuls in Abuja. The screening sessions began on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the FCT Sports Department located within the Area 3 complex. This five-day administrative evaluation aims to vet candidates seeking leadership positions across multiple regional sports bodies. The initiative represents a crucial step toward concluding more than three years of temporary caretaker administration in the capital territory.
The intensive exercise is designed to establish legitimate governing boards with fresh leadership ideas to restructure local athletic organizations. On the opening day, institutional aspirants representing eight key sporting associations appeared before the verification panel. These pioneer administrative groups included representatives from athletics, basketball, table tennis, badminton, golf, boxing, gymnastics, and handball. The evaluation process continued systematically on Friday morning with prospective board members from judo, karate, and scrabble undergoing detailed credentials assessment.
The vetting panel will temporarily pause operations over the weekend before resuming activities on Monday, May 25, 2026. The incoming session will accommodate candidates from archery, cricket, taekwondo, traditional sports, kickboxing, tennis, hockey, and darts. The entire administrative exercise will officially conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The final group of institutional applicants scheduled for assessment includes individuals from rugby, wrestling, baseball, parasports, and volleyball.
Experienced sports administrator Mr. Godwin Bamigboye leads the designated nine-member screening panel as committee chairman, alongside committee secretary Mr. Agbor Clinton. The administrative panel also features Dr. Charles Agadu, Mr. Iyiola Ogundele, Dr. Mrs. Whoba Esther, and Honorable Albert Atiwurcha. Additional panel members evaluating candidate portfolios include Niyi Busari, Uche Nwudoh, Adakole Jones, and Dave Jegede. The evaluators score each applicant independently based on professional background, leadership competence, and character prerequisites.
FCT Sports Director Luka Istifanus previously emphasized that establishing permanent administrative boards will accelerate structural development. The department aims to eliminate weak institutional leadership and encourage private sector funding collaborations to expand local sports programs. The successful candidates will progress toward formal elections and an official inauguration ceremony. The steering committee will announce the definitive election timeline immediately after concluding the verification process.
