Fatodu’s Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Board Election Boosts Nigeria’s Continental Influence

The President of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), Hon. Lekan Fatodu, has been elected to the Board of Africa Aquatics Zone 2, giving Nigeria a stronger voice in the administration and development of aquatic sports in the sub-region.

Africa Aquatics Zone 2 comprises 22 countries from West and Central Africa, with Fatodu’s election expected to provide Nigeria with a platform to contribute more actively to the growth of swimming and other aquatic sports across the continent.

Fatodu, who spoke after his election, said the new responsibility would be used to strengthen collaboration among member countries, improve technical development and create more opportunities for athletes.

“This is a call to greater responsibility and an opportunity to contribute to the development of aquatics across Africa, while also using the platform to advance the growth of swimming in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the federation would continue to strengthen partnerships and development programmes to ensure Nigerian swimmers compete and excel at the highest level.

Meanwhile, Nigeria continued its impressive showing at the ongoing Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championship, topping the medal table after Day Two with 24 medals comprising 10 gold, 11 silver and three bronze.

In a late move to further bolster the team, the NAqF included Commonwealth Games swimmers Clinton Opute and Collins Ebinga in the senior category of the championship.

Ebinga justified his inclusion by winning a silver medal in the men’s 50 metres butterfly, contributing to Nigeria’s impressive medal haul.

Aidan Dumuje was also among Nigeria’s standout performers, winning gold in the boys’ 100 metres freestyle and silver in the 50 metres butterfly.

India Brown produced another outstanding performance, claiming gold in the women’s 200 metres butterfly and 200 metres freestyle, while Tofunmi Ibidapo won silver in the 200 metres butterfly.

Other Nigerian medal winners included Omolola Akinsanmi, who secured silver in the girls’ 100 metres freestyle, while Atinuke and Demi won silver medals in the girls’ and boys’ 100 metres breaststroke, respectively.

Tise added a bronze medal in the girls’ 800 metres event.

With more events still to come, Nigeria will be seeking to maintain its lead on the medal table and further strengthen its dominance at the championship.
