Fariba Hashimi Wins Asian Games Silver After Remarkable Cycling Journey

Afghanistan’s Fariba Hashimi won silver in the women’s road race at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, adding a major achievement to her remarkable cycling journey. The 23-year-old finished behind China’s Guo Li, with Hong Kong’s Leung Wing Yee taking bronze.

Hashimi previously had to disguise herself as a man to train in Afghanistan, where she faced hostility while pursuing cycling as a teenager. She began the sport at 15 after following her sister, Yulduz, into cycling and has recalled having stones and bottles thrown at her during training.

She left Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and later moved to Italy with support from former world champion Alessandra Cappellotto. Hashimi and her sister continued their careers in Europe and represented Afghanistan at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The silver medal came two days after Hashimi finished seventh in the women’s individual time trial at the Asian Games. Her latest result marks Afghanistan’s first medal in women’s cycling at the Games.

Hashimi described the medal as something special and said she hoped her achievement would encourage Afghan women and girls to pursue their ambitions. She also has her sights set on competing at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
