Eugenio Chacarra produced a remarkable opening round at the Open de España presented by Madrid, shooting a five-under-par 66 despite playing with a fractured toe. The Spaniard finished the first day tied for the lead with Scotland’s Connor Syme and Grant Forrest.
Chacarra suffered the injury during a late-night trip for water while in the United States last week. Despite the pain and difficulty walking, the 26-year-old was determined to compete in his national open in Madrid.
The three-time DP World Tour winner made an impressive start, recovering from an early bogey with an eagle at the 15th before adding a birdie at the ninth. Further birdies at the second and fourth moved him to four under, although consecutive bogeys at the fifth and sixth briefly slowed his progress.
Chacarra responded in spectacular fashion at the par-five seventh, hitting his approach to within four feet and converting for his second eagle of the day. He then birdied the ninth to complete his 66 and establish the clubhouse target.
The result continues an excellent season for Chacarra, who has already claimed two victories, winning national opens in the Netherlands and Italy in successive starts. He is also firmly involved in the Race to Dubai battle and entered the Spanish Open in third place.
However, his participation beyond Thursday remains uncertain. Chacarra admitted that walking became increasingly painful during the closing holes and said he would consult his medical team before deciding whether to continue.
“I can’t guarantee I’ll tee off tomorrow,” Chacarra said after his round, highlighting the difficult decision facing him despite his superb position on the leaderboard.
