Enugu State will become the centre of handball activities in Nigeria when it hosts the 4×4 Handball Championship and IRT Referee Training Course from July 7 to 11, 2026.
The championship, organised by the Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development in collaboration with the South-East Zonal Representative and the National Sports Commission Zone 1, will take place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The five-day event is expected to bring together teams, coaches, referees, and handball enthusiasts from across the country for a blend of competitive action and technical capacity building.
The South-East Zonal Representative on the board of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Comrade Emmanuel Onyebuchi Asogwa, expressed confidence that the championship would be successfully staged, citing the level of preparation already undertaken by the organisers.
He disclosed that participating teams have stepped up their preparations and are looking forward to showcasing their talents in Enugu.
Asogwa also commended the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for its commitment and support towards hosting both the championship and the IRT Referee Training Course.
Beyond the competition, the programme is expected to strengthen grassroots handball development, enhance the quality of officiating through referee training, and further position Enugu as one of Nigeria's emerging destinations for major sporting events.
The championship is also expected to provide a platform for discovering new talents, promoting technical excellence, and reinforcing the continued growth of handball across Nigeria through competition and education.
