Enoh, Dikko, Imoke Hail Ikpeme’s New Book on Nigerian Sports Development

Posted : 19 June 2026

Prominent political leaders, sports administrators, and football legends gathered at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Thursday, June 18, 2026. They attended the official public presentation of a new book authored by Dr. Emmanuel Edem Ikpeme. The publication is titled Perspectives on Sports Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Ways Forward.

The high-profile event was chaired by Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry and former Minister of Sports Development. Senator Enoh described the 373-page book as a significant intellectual contribution to the nation's sports sector; he praised the author’s deep knowledge and analytical discipline. Enoh further stressed that policymakers must view sports as vital social infrastructure and a powerful tool for youth empowerment rather than relying on emergency tournament funding.

National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, also lauded the book, calling it a brilliant benchmark work. Dikko noted that many recommendations in the publication align perfectly with the ongoing restructuring inside the commission. He highlighted recent presidential reforms by President Bola Tinubu; these include a huge increase in sports budget allocations and the approval of the Sports Infrastructure Development Bond.

Former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke also paid glowing tribute to the author during the ceremony. Imoke recalled his successful working relationship with Ikpeme when the state hosted the national teams ahead of their continental triumphs. He noted that instead of writing a regular memoir, Ikpeme chose to produce a policy-focused guide that will serve as a vital reference point for future administrators.

The book itself features twelve detailed chapters analyzing eleven different sports and the critical issue of anti-doping governance. Reviewing the publication, Professor Olufemi Adegbesan of the University of Ibadan commended its massive contribution to local sports scholarship. The launch attracted top dignitaries, including NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Super Eagles coach Eric Sekou Chelle, and iconic former national team captain Nwankwo Kanu.
