England's pursuit falls short as India levels series in Visakhapatnam

Posted : 05 February 2024

The England-India Test series stands level at 1-1 as England fell short of the daunting target of 399 runs to win the second Test in Visakhapatnam. The tourists displayed initial promise, reaching 95-1, but a steady fall of wickets, starting with the dismissal of Rehan Ahmed, derailed their pursuit. Opener Zak Crawley's elegant innings of 73 seemed to offer hope until his lbw dismissal to Kuldeep Yadav shifted the game's momentum.

England's aspirations suffered a significant blow with the run-out of captain Ben Stokes, leaving them with only three wickets and 179 runs needed. Despite a resilient partnership between Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley, who delayed India with a stand of 56, their efforts ultimately proved insufficient. Foakes fell to fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, and Mukesh Kumar's dismissal of Shoaib Bashir allowed Ravichandran Ashwin another opportunity for his 500th Test wicket.

However, Bumrah's three-wicket haul in the innings and nine in the match, including the pivotal dismissal of Hartley's off stump, denied Ashwin the milestone, leaving him with 499 wickets. The result sets the stage for an intriguing third Test in Rajkot on February 15, as England seeks a comeback and India aims to secure the series lead.
