England Face Selection Dilemma Ahead of India Test with Bethell’s Return

Posted : 05 June 2025

England selector Luke Wright has declined to guarantee Ollie Pope’s spot at number three for the upcoming first Test against India, following Jacob Bethell’s return to the squad. Bethell, who was unavailable during the victory over Zimbabwe due to IPL commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, is back in contention after impressing with an 82-run knock in the recent ODI against West Indies.

While captain Ben Stokes previously hinted at Bethell’s immediate reinstatement, he later clarified that those remarks were misinterpreted and only referred to Bethell’s return to the squad, not the starting XI.

Although Pope, who struck a century at Trent Bridge, is expected to retain his place for the Headingley Test, Wright maintained that the final team selection would hinge on a range of factors. These include playing conditions and team dynamics, which will be assessed once the squad regroups in Leeds.

Bethell, who impressed at number three during England’s tour of New Zealand last year, remains a strong contender for a top-order spot. Wright acknowledged Bethell’s rising stock, calling him “a great talent” and noted that his presence offers valuable depth to the side.

The competition for places extends beyond Pope, with Bethell potentially challenging opener Zak Crawley or spinner Shoaib Bashir, although a direct comparison with Pope remains the most likely scenario.

Wright dismissed concerns that such uncertainty might disrupt team morale, emphasizing that competition for places is a natural part of international cricket. He added that England’s players are seasoned professionals who understand the pressures and dynamics of team selection, and such depth only strengthens the squad.

In other selection developments, Jamie Overton has been recalled for the first time in three years to provide an extra pace option, while Matthew Potts misses out, having slipped behind Sam Cook in the pecking order. Meanwhile, Jofra Archer is working his way back from a thumb injury and is expected to make a red-ball return with Sussex.

Having not played a first-class match in over four years, Archer hopes to be in contention for England’s second or third Test against India, pending successful outings for Sussex’s second XI and then the senior team.
