England Crush Sri Lanka to Complete T20 Clean Sweep and Reclaim No. 1 Ranking

England completed a dominant 3-0 T20 series sweep over Sri Lanka with an eight-wicket victory at Old Trafford on Saturday. The result lifted England back to number one in the ICC men's T20 rankings after India had previously held the position.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124 in 18.5 overs after England's pace attack produced another strong performance. Pathum Nissanka top-scored with 36 from 24 balls, while Kamindu Mendis made 35 from 28. Sonny Baker, Jofra Archer and Will Jacks each took two wickets, while Jamie Overton conceded just 15 runs from his four overs.

England's response was swift as they reached 126-2 in only 9.4 overs. Jos Buttler led the chase with an unbeaten 62 from 32 balls, while Harry Brook contributed 33 from 21 before being run out.

The victory was completed with 62 balls remaining, giving England their biggest winning margin in terms of balls remaining in a home T20 international. It also extended their impressive record under Brook's captaincy to 23 wins from 26 completed T20 internationals since he took charge in the summer of 2024.

England's bowlers set up the result before the batters finished the job. Baker continued his improvement during the series after difficult starts in his previous international appearances, while Archer recovered from conceding 15 runs in his opening over to finish with two wickets.

Overton was particularly effective. His four-over spell was his most economical in a T20 international, while the England fielders also maintained pressure with several important moments in the field.

Liam Dawson produced one of the highlights when he ran out Eshan Malinga with a direct hit. Brook also took a sharp catch to dismiss Nissanka, while Adil Rashid helped remove Charith Asalanka through another run-out.

Buttler and Brook then took control of the chase. The pair added 85 for the second wicket before Brook was run out for 33. Buttler finished the contest in style by striking two sixes during an 18-run over before sealing victory.

The series also gave England valuable preparation ahead of their next major limited-overs target. Their next assignment is a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, beginning in Durham on Tuesday, as they build towards the 2027 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.

The next men's T20 World Cup is scheduled for 2028, when T20 cricket will also make its Olympic debut.
