England Survive Pakistan Scare to Complete 3-0 Test Series Sweep

England survived a dramatic start to the final day before defeating Pakistan by eight wickets at Edgbaston and completing a 3-0 Test series clean sweep. Joe Root and Jordan Cox steadied the chase after England lost both openers in the first over.

Pakistan had given themselves a genuine chance of pulling off an unlikely victory after recovering from a huge first-innings deficit. Debutant Razaullah's aggressive 81, supported by Mohammad Abbas, helped Pakistan reach 449 in their second innings and set England a target of 130.

England's chase then began disastrously when Ben Duckett edged Muhammad Abbas behind from the first delivery. Emilio Gay was dismissed lbw later in the same over, leaving the hosts 2-2 and suddenly under serious pressure.

However, Joe Root and Jordan Cox produced the response England needed. Root survived a major scare when he was bowled off a Mohammad Ali no-ball, while Cox continued his impressive series with another composed innings.

The pair eventually took control of the chase, combining for an unbeaten 128-run partnership. Root finished 62 not out and Cox remained unbeaten on 59 as England reached their target in the 25th over.

The victory capped a successful return to the England captaincy for Root following Ben Stokes' retirement. It also gave England their first Test series win in 19 months, ending a turbulent summer on a high note.

Pakistan can take some encouragement from their late fightback, particularly Razaullah's fearless debut performance, but England's superior bowling and batting depth ultimately proved decisive throughout the three-Test series.

England will now switch their attention to white-ball cricket, with Sri Lanka next on the schedule. Brendon McCullum is set to return to oversee the limited-overs side, with Kevin Pietersen also joining the coaching staff.
