The National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed Africa's reigning shot put champion, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, as Team Nigeria's male captain for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The United States-based athlete will share the leadership role with two-time Paralympic champion Folashade Oluwafemilayo, who has been named the team's female captain for the Games scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 2.
Enekwechi, 33, boasts an impressive résumé, having won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, claimed the African Games title in 2019, and currently holds the African Championship crown. He is also the reigning National Sports Festival champion.
Explaining the decision, the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, said the appointments reflect the Commission's commitment to recognizing athletes who have consistently excelled while serving as role models for the next generation.
According to Olopade, Enekwechi and Oluwafemilayo embody discipline, integrity, and dedication, making them ideal leaders for Team Nigeria at the Games.
"We have picked individuals who not only have strong track records in their respective sports but are also outstanding mentors to younger athletes through their sacrifices, integrity, and commitment to representing Nigeria," he said.
He added that the appointments are also a demonstration of the nation's appreciation for their contributions to Nigerian sports, noting that their efforts align with the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda for sports development.
Meanwhile, Team Nigeria is scheduled to depart for Aberdeen, Scotland, on Thursday, July 2, where the contingent will undergo a three-week training camp ahead of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The athletes and officials are also expected to receive their official Puma-designed competition apparel, which will be unveiled by the NSC on Wednesday before the team's departure.
This leadership appointment and early preparation camp underscore Nigeria's strategic efforts to ensure an impactful performance in Scotland. By positioning decorated veterans at the helm, the nation aims to foster unit cohesion and inspire podium success at the global event.
