Nigeria’s latest armwrestling sensation, Emmanuella Ifuoma Oluigbo, believes her triumph at the maiden West Africa Para-Games in Abeokuta is just the first step in what she hopes will become a dominant run on the international stage.
Oluigbo, who emerged champion in both the left- and right-hand women’s 80kg armwrestling events, celebrated her achievement as a long-awaited breakthrough.
Moments after receiving her medals, the elated athlete shared how proud and grateful she felt to stand atop the podium.
“It is a great honour for me. I never imagined this moment happening the way it did, but God has made it possible,” she said.
For Oluigbo, the medals represent more than just victory—they are a source of renewed motivation. She believes her performance will inspire her to intensify her training and represent Nigeria with even greater confidence in upcoming championships.
According to her, armwrestling is a sport full of joy, passion, and resilience, and she wants more Nigerians to experience it.
“This gold has given me extra energy and belief in myself. I want others to see that armwrestling can bring happiness and pride,” she added.
However, she also noted that Nigeria’s armwrestling scene requires greater attention and support if athletes are to continue breaking barriers.
Oluigbo made a strong appeal to the National Sports Commission and other authorities to invest more in the sport, particularly in funding and infrastructure.
“We need the government’s full support—financially and in every other way—so that we can climb higher,” she emphasized.
Her message is clear: the Para-Games victory is only the beginning. With the right backing, Oluigbo believes her success can help push armwrestling into mainstream recognition and inspire more athletes across the nation.
