EL-Amin Polo Organisation has strengthened its dominance in Nigerian polo after securing a record 17th Georgian Cup title at the 2026 Kaduna International Polo Tournament.
The Kaduna-based team also claimed the Argentine Ambassador's Cup following a dramatic encounter against Malcomines at Murtala Muhammed Square, Kaduna. The tournament celebrated EL-Amin's 31st anniversary and Nigeria's longstanding polo heritage.
The Georgian Cup final produced an entertaining contest between EL-Amin and Malcomines. Both teams finished regulation time with a 10-10 draw, but EL-Amin emerged winners after the decision was settled on a toss.
The triumph further extended EL-Amin's record as the most successful team in the history of the prestigious competition. The Georgian Cup, made from Georgian silver, was presented to the Kaduna Polo Club in 1919 by the then British Bank for West Africa, now FirstBank Plc.
EL-Amin first won the trophy in 1999 at Murtala Muhammed Square. The team subsequently established a record with its 15th triumph during its Silver Jubilee celebrations before extending that achievement with further victories.
Team patron and defender Mohammad Babangida described the latest success as a special moment for the organisation.
"Winning the Georgian Trophy for the 17th time means everything to me. I feel like it's my first win," Babangida said.
He also credited the team's consistency to the understanding and long-standing relationship among its players, particularly Ibrahim Mohammed and Bello Buba.
Babangida noted that EL-Amin had contested the Georgian Cup more than 20 times, winning it on 17 occasions. He also maintained that the organisation had established itself as a dominant force in high-goal polo competitions across Nigeria.
Other Kaduna-based teams also enjoyed success at the tournament.
Kaduna Sublime defeated their opponents to win the Emir of Katsina Cup, while Kaduna Musaco secured the Imani Cup after an impressive campaign. Duku Rocks claimed the EL-Amin Cup following a strong performance against their competitors.
The 2026 edition attracted more than 40 teams, including professional players from Argentina, Europe and South Africa. The competition featured an extended 10-day programme as organisers celebrated the tournament's 107th anniversary.
Beyond the sporting action, the festival also incorporated social awareness activities. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organised a special novelty match to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child and promote awareness against gender-based violence.
The closing ceremony attracted several prominent dignitaries, including Kaduna State Deputy Governor Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, Niger State Governor Umar Bago and the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumuni Kabir Usman.
The successful festival further highlighted Kaduna's position as an important centre for Nigerian polo while extending EL-Amin's remarkable record in one of the country's most historic sporting competitions.
