Egypt, Tunisia Arrive in Lagos for 2025 African Fencing Championships

Posted : 23 June 2025

Two of Africa’s fencing giants, Egypt and Tunisia, have arrived in Lagos ahead of the 23rd African Fencing Championships, which will be held at Charterhouse Lagos from June 25 to 29.

The five-day tournament will feature 12 events, covering both individual and team competitions, with top fencers from across the continent vying for 12 gold medals.

Egypt, the most successful African nation in the sport, has touched down in Lagos with the largest squad. Leading the Egyptian contingent are the El-Sayed brothers—Mohamed El-Sayed, a bronze medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Mahmoud El-Sayed, the reigning junior world champion and current World No. 1 junior fencer.

Mohamed, 22, also claimed gold at the 2022 Mediterranean Games, while 19-year-old Mahmoud recently clinched gold at the 2025 Junior World Championships in Wuxi, China.

Tunisia has also arrived with a formidable team, captained by Farès Ferjani, the Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist and current men’s sabre champion. The 27-year-old is expected to lead Tunisia’s charge in the sabre events.

More delegations are expected to arrive on Tuesday, including teams from Mauritius, Angola, Rwanda, South Africa, Guinea, Morocco, Libya, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF) has expressed gratitude to its sponsors and partners for their support in hosting this prestigious event.

NFF President Adeyinka Samuel praised the contributions of both the government and private sector, singling out Charterhouse Lagos, which also hosted the 2024 FIE World Cup.

“Charterhouse has been a committed partner since 2024, and their support is greatly valued. We hope others will follow their example,” Samuel said.

With the arrival of top-tier athletes and countries, the stage is set for an exciting and competitive championship, as Nigeria welcomes Africa’s best to Lagos for a landmark event in the continent’s fencing calendar.
