Egypt’s Omar Ehab Stuns Defending Champion Mathew Kuti at Africa West Regional Championship

Omar Ehab of Egypt pulled off a stunning upset to eliminate defending and reigning champion Mathew Kuti in the U-19 boys’ team semifinal at the Africa West Regional Championship.

 

The high-stakes match took place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, located within Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Ehab emerged victorious with a 3-1 win (14-12, 4-11, 11-4, 11-6) in what has been hailed as one of the tournament’s most thrilling encounters. Both players showcased remarkable skill and determination, but it was Ehab’s precision and tactical play that ultimately made the difference.

 

The victory marks a major breakthrough in Ehab’s young career and cements his rising reputation on the African table tennis scene.

 

In the U-15 girls’ team category, Algeria’s Tania Morice delivered a commanding performance to defeat Uganda’s Patience Anyango in straight sets, 3-0 (14-11, 11-8, 11-7), securing her place in the semifinals. Her dominant showing further highlights her status as one of Africa’s emerging table tennis talents.

 

In another semifinal clash, Algerian player Jade Morice edged past Uganda’s Jemimah Nakawala in a closely contested match, winning 3-2 (11-9, 12-10, 6-11).

 

Meanwhile, Uganda’s Patra Nasirumbi claimed a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Algeria’s Amani Tazerouti (13-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-5, 11-8), adding to the drama and excitement of the competition.

 

The Algerian team’s combination of skill and strategy has proven effective, earning them multiple semifinal berths.
