Egypt reaffirmed its dominance in African fencing by emerging overall champions at the 23rd African Fencing Championships held at Charterhouse, Lagos. The five-day continental event concluded with Egypt finishing at the top of the medal table, winning 11 gold, five silver, and five bronze medals.

In the men’s team foil event, Egypt’s squad comprising Abdelrahman Tolba, Karim Medhat, Mohamed Hamza, and Sief Elghayesh delivered a dominant performance. They defeated Nigeria 45-9 in the semifinals before securing a 45-23 victory over Angola in the final.

Angola reached the final after a dramatic 45-44 comeback win against Algeria, earning their first-ever podium finish at the competition.

Egypt also claimed gold in the women’s team epee final after Algeria withdrew with the score tied at 6-6. The match was awarded to Egypt by a P. Black decision.

In the women’s team sabre final, Egypt’s team of Alanoud Hegazy, Nada Hafez, Nagwa Nofal, and Renad Eldoksh triumphed over Algeria 45-40 to add another gold to their tally.

Kenya finished second on the medal table with one gold medal. Tunisia placed third with two silver and two bronze medals, while Algeria secured one silver and six bronze medals. Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa each earned one silver and one bronze medal. Angola claimed one silver medal, while Morocco, Cape Verde, and Senegal each took home a bronze medal.

Nigeria recorded a major breakthrough in the women’s epee category, winning their first-ever match at the African Championships. The Nigerian team, consisting of Somtochukwu Eribenne, Sara Idongesit, and Adebodunirin Thomas, recovered from a quarterfinal loss to Algeria to defeat Benin Republic 45-40 in the classification match for fifth place.

Speaking after the match, Adebodunirin Thomas described the victory as a morale booster for the team.

“We are thrilled to get our first win and secure a top-five finish in the event. We worked hard together as a team, and our coach played a big part in helping us challenge our opponents. This experience will definitely boost our confidence heading into the next competition,” she said.

The 23rd African Fencing Championships featured over 120 fencers from 18 countries and was hosted by the Nigeria Fencing Federation.
