Egan Bernal Triumphs in First Race Since 2022 Crash

Posted : 07 February 2025

Egan Bernal, the former Tour de France champion, has claimed his first victory since his life-threatening crash in 2022. The 28-year-old Colombian, racing for the British Ineos Grenadiers team, triumphed in the national individual time-trial championships, finishing seven seconds ahead of Walter Vargas and 29 seconds faster than his Ineos teammate, Brandon Smith Rivera.

Bernal's victory marks a remarkable comeback after a devastating crash in January 2022, where he collided with a stationary bus during a training session near Bogotá, Colombia. The crash left him with severe injuries, including damage to his spine, legs, knees, and chest, and he required multiple surgeries to recover. At the time, doctors gave him a 95% chance of becoming a paraplegic, but he defied the odds to return to racing.

The crash occurred while Bernal was traveling at speeds over 50 km/h on a time-trial bike, which led to his collision with the bus. His recovery process was long and grueling, but his determination and gratitude for being alive have fueled his return to professional cycling. Bernal had been one of Ineos' top riders, known for his general classification victories, and his comeback victory is a significant milestone in his career.

Before his crash, Bernal had already established himself as a prominent figure in cycling, winning the 2019 Tour de France at just 22 years old and the 2021 Giro d'Italia. Despite setbacks, including abandoning the 2020 Tour due to a back injury, his latest win signals a hopeful chapter in his journey to reclaim his place among the sport's elite riders.
