The South-West Zonal Coordinator and a board member of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Emmanuel Egbele, has called on all participants at the 22nd National Sports Festival to compete fairly for medals.
Ogun State, the host of the Games, will see over 10,000 athletes from 35 states and Abuja compete in 37 sports, including some designated as demonstration sports, from May 16 to 30.
The desire to win medals by representatives of the states could spark intense rivalries that might affect the essence of the Games, which are designed to discover talent.
Egbele urged all participants to adhere to the stipulated rules and regulations, with fairness and sportsmanship being the top priorities.
"With the 22nd National Sports Festival just a few days away, it's important to note that this is our own Olympics and the biggest event in Africa," he said.
"As part of national development, the best athletes in each sport, produced from these Games, will represent the country at international competitions. Therefore, all athletes and officials must compete fairly and avoid gamesmanship," he emphasized.
The convener of the prestigious Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST) further stated that failing to produce the best talent for the country due to unfair competition would not be beneficial for the development of the nation's sports, especially with the National Sports Commission's new mandate to make sports an economy-driven sector.
"Good talent attracts the interest of individuals and corporate organizations, bringing the mileage and sponsorship needed for greater investment in sports development," he said.
"What is needed is to show that, although recreational, sports is a serious business and should be viewed positively."
"This is the first National Sports Festival to be organized under the new National Sports Commission, so there must be a deliberate effort to extract the best from these Games," he affirmed.
