According to the chief convener, Emmanuel Egbele, the tournament will not only showcase elite-level talent but also serve as a platform to scout national representatives. “EEAST is open to everyone — from grassroots talents to international pros,” Egbele said, stressing the competition’s inclusivity and strategic value. “The Nigeria Scrabble Federation will closely monitor performances here to identify players for the WESPAC team,” he added.
Among those expected to headline the elite category are 2022 EEAST champion Enoch Nwali and reigning African champion Oluwatimilehin Doko. However, Egbele was quick to point out that rising stars and lesser-known players will also be given opportunities to prove themselves on the national stage.
To ensure competitive balance, participants have been divided into three distinct rating-based categories: the Elites Zone (rated 1300 and above), the Challengers Category (rated below 1300), and a newly introduced Sages Category, designed specifically for veteran players. This structure aims to encourage wide participation while maintaining fair play across experience levels.
The tournament will feature a ₦5 million prize pool, with the elite category winner set to receive ₦700,000. Additional spot prizes and special recognitions will be awarded over the course of the two-day event. EEAST 2025 will take place at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos from July 5 to 6, bringing together top-rated Nigerian and international scrabblers for one of Africa’s most anticipated wordplay competitions.
