Early medals signal Nigeria’s growing strength at Africa Aquatics Championships

Posted : 07 May 2026

Team Nigeria has announced its arrival in emphatic fashion at the ongoing 17th Africa Aquatics Championships in Oran, Algeria, with early podium finishes and strong qualification performances pointing to a promising campaign.

The Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Head of Media and Communications, Arinzechi Chukwunonso, highlighted the team’s encouraging start, describing it as a reflection of steady progress in the sport.

Nigeria opened its medal account on Day 1 through Collins Ebinga, who delivered an impressive swim in the men’s 100m butterfly to secure a bronze medal.

His time of 50.68 seconds marked a new personal best, reinforcing his emergence as one of the country’s standout swimmers on the continental stage.

Adding to the early success, India Kate Brown also clinched a bronze medal, further boosting Nigeria’s tally and setting a positive tone for the competition.

The momentum carried into Day 2, with Nigerian swimmers maintaining visibility in key finals. Ebinga continued his strong showing by qualifying for the 50m butterfly final, while Dorcas Oka advanced to the final of the 100m breaststroke, highlighting the team’s improving depth across multiple events.

In the 50m butterfly final, Ebinga narrowly missed out on another medal, finishing fourth behind competitors from Egypt and South Africa. Oka also put up a determined effort in the 100m breaststroke final but ended outside the podium places.

Despite missing additional medals, NAqF praised the athletes for their resilience and competitive spirit, noting that reaching multiple finals is a significant indicator of growth.

“These performances reflect clear progress for Nigerian aquatics, with podium finishes, personal bests, and consistent appearances in finals demonstrating a positive trajectory,” the federation stated.

With several events still to be contested, Team Nigeria remains optimistic about adding to its medal haul as it continues its campaign in Oran. The federation also reiterated its commitment to supporting athletes and strengthening Nigeria’s presence in aquatic sports across Africa.

The early achievements of the Nigerian contingent in Oran underscore a significant leap in the nation's competitive swimming standards. These results provide a solid foundation for future successes as the athletes continue to challenge continental elites. This campaign serves as a testament to the dedication of the swimmers and the strategic vision of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation.
