Fredrik Dversnes Wins Giro d’Italia Stage 15 as Safety Concerns Halt Milan Sprint

Posted : 24 May 2026

Fredrik Dversnes secured the biggest victory of his career on Sunday by winning Stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia, capitalising on a breakaway after a chaotic finish in Milan.

The Norwegian rider crossed the line ahead of Italian trio Mirco Maestri, Martin Marcellusi, and Mattia Bais, as the expected bunch sprint failed to take shape in unusual circumstances.

The 157-kilometre stage from Voghera to Milan, which was widely expected to favour the sprinters, took a dramatic turn after riders raised concerns over safety on the finishing circuit. Race organisers were forced to neutralise the final kilometres for general classification purposes before extending the decision to the entire final lap.

Despite the disruption, the stage result remained valid, allowing Dversnes to celebrate a landmark win for Uno-X Mobility, marking his first professional victory since last year’s Arctic Race of Norway.

Jonas Vingegaard retained the pink jersey as overall leader, holding a two-minute and 26-second advantage over Afonso Eulalio following the unexpected conclusion to the stage.

Vingegaard explained after the race that riders collectively agreed the final circuit was unsafe, prompting discussions with race officials who ultimately adjusted the finish. He added that the peloton shared similar concerns and welcomed the organisers’ response.

The stage’s unusual ending overshadowed what was expected to be a routine sprint finish, instead turning into a breakaway opportunity that Dversnes fully exploited.

Attention now turns to the decisive final week of the Giro d’Italia, which begins after a rest day on Monday. The race resumes with a challenging mountain stage from Bellinzona to Cari in Switzerland, where the battle for the overall classification is expected to intensify.
