Doug Barron produced a thrilling finish at the PGA Tour Champions’ Pure Insurance Championship on Sunday in Monterrey, California, closing with three straight birdies to secure the title. His final putt came after a tense stretch where he found two bunkers, yet he calmly finished the tournament at 12-under 204.
Barron began the day four strokes behind and tied for sixth but carded a 6-under-par 66 on the Pebble Beach course to move into first place. Fiji’s Vijay Singh finished just one stroke back at 11 under after a final-round 69, giving Barron a narrow victory.
The $2.4 million event used both Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill for Friday and Saturday, while only Pebble Beach hosted the final round on Sunday. On the 18th hole, Barron hit his tee shot into a fairway bunker to the right, followed by a second shot that ended up in another bunker on the left. Undeterred, he played his third shot to pin-high on the green, allowing the ball to roll into the cup from the back edge, clinching the championship.
“The nerves got me off the tee; I hit the ball right,” Barron said after the win. “I told my caddie I’d just play a thin shot, get to the back of the green, and try to make a putt. That’s what we did, and it worked out.”
Barron dedicated the victory to his late father, who had played extensively at the Monterrey Peninsula and passed away in January. This win marks the 56-year-old’s fourth PGA Tour Champions title and his first of the season.
New Zealand’s Steven Alker, who shared the 36-hole lead, shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for third at 10 under alongside South Africa’s Retief Goosen, who posted the low round of the tournament with a 7-under 65. A group of four golfers—Justin Leonard, Fred Couples, Y.E. Yang, and Stewart Cink—rounded out the top five at 8 under. Canadian Mike Weir, who was tied for the lead after two rounds, ended the tournament in a tie for ninth at 209 after a 3-over 75 on Sunday.
