Dolphin Swimming League Season 8 Inspires Young Swimmers in Lagos

Posted : 06 October 2026

The eighth season of the Dolphin Swimming League has given young swimmers in Lagos another opportunity to compete, improve their times and test themselves against some of the best junior talents in the country. The season opened on Saturday, October 3, at Grange School, Ikeja, with hundreds of swimmers, parents and guardians in attendance.

The competition has grown considerably since it began in 2018 with just five schools. Season 8 now features 23 schools and swimming clubs, including Swimfinity Club from Abuja, which is participating for the first time.

Young swimmers competed for honours while coaches, parents and teachers provided support from the poolside. For many of the participants, the event offered more than medals; it provided valuable competition experience and a chance to measure their progress.

Corona School swimmer Jotham Abdullahi said his focus has shifted towards improving his personal best times. After three years in the league, he said the competition has also helped him build confidence, friendships and a stronger understanding of hard work.

Parents at the event praised the organisers for creating a disciplined and motivating environment. They said the league encourages children to stay active while teaching them to challenge themselves and pursue improvement.

Vice President of the Africa Aquatics Federation, Babatunde Fatai-Williams, praised the league for its contribution to junior swimming in Nigeria. He said regular competition allows young athletes to train, compete, assess their performances and develop their skills over time.

Fatai-Williams also linked the strength of Lagos swimmers at national junior competitions and the National Youth Games to the opportunities provided by grassroots events. He said sustained competition is essential for developing swimmers capable of performing at higher levels.

League Coordinator Oluseyi Oyebode called for stronger support for grassroots swimming programmes. He said better structures and collaboration are needed to develop talents locally and reduce the number of promising swimmers who leave Nigeria in search of better opportunities.

The organisers have also introduced measures to improve the technical quality of the competition. Cameras will monitor races, while assisted timing devices will help reduce human error, following a pre-season clinic on updated World Aquatics regulations.

Season 8 has also separated elementary and secondary competitions to improve fairness and organisation. The league is targeting further expansion into Abuja and other parts of the South-West as it continues its long-term mission of producing swimmers capable of representing Nigeria internationally.
