Pittsburgh Steelers receiver DK Metcalf was at the center of a controversy during the team’s 29-24 win against the Detroit Lions after video footage suggested he punched a fan at Ford Field. The incident occurred in the second quarter when Metcalf approached a spectator leaning over the front railing and appeared to swing his fist after grabbing the fan’s blue wig.
CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson described the moment, noting that the fan said something to Metcalf, who reacted with a swipe. “Obviously, Metcalf did not like what he said, and you saw the swipe there. No Steelers came over to him and mentioned anything,” Wolfson said during the broadcast.
The fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy, told the Detroit Free Press that he had called out Metcalf by his full name. “I called him that, and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby,” Kennedy said.
NFL officials did not witness the altercation during the game, so Metcalf remained on the field and finished with four catches for 42 yards, helping the Steelers secure their third consecutive victory. Despite remaining in the game, the league has launched a review and could impose disciplinary action following its investigation.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the situation, stating: “I heard about it, but I hadn't seen it and I hadn't had an opportunity to talk to DK.” The team and the league are expected to provide further updates once the review concludes.
