Deon Germishuys Wins Stella Artois Players Championship in Playoff Thriller

Deon Germishuys overcame a five-shot deficit in the final round to win the Stella Artois Players Championship at Glendower Golf Club on Sunday, defeating Cole Stevens in a playoff to claim his fourth Sunshine Tour title.

Germishuys and Stevens finished the regulation 72 holes tied at 19 under par, setting up a playoff after contrasting final rounds. Stevens, who had led going into the final day, carded a 73, while Germishuys produced a four-under-par 68 to force the extra hole.

On the first playoff hole, Germishuys delivered a superb second shot that landed less than half a metre from the pin. He calmly tapped in for birdie, while Stevens could only manage par, handing Germishuys the title.

Despite admitting that he had struggled in previous playoffs, Germishuys said he remained patient and focused on executing the basics. He explained that he was relieved to see his approach shot land and spin back towards the hole, particularly given the swirling wind around the 18th.

The victory marked Germishuys’s fourth triumph on the Sunshine Tour and his first since winning the South African PGA Championship almost a year ago. He said the success was especially satisfying after a difficult season and came sooner than he had anticipated.

Although Stevens missed out on his maiden Sunshine Tour title, he enjoyed another strong week in an impressive rookie campaign. His performance moved him to the top of the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings and into fifth place on the Courier Guy Order of Merit.

Jonathan Broomhead finished third on 18 under par, securing his fourth top-five result of the season. Brett Whitehouse received the medallion awarded to the tournament-winning caddie.
