The third day of the 12th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) National Swimming Championship lit up the Stephen Keshi Stadium Swimming Arena in Asaba with electrifying performances and nail-biting finishes, as swimmers from across Nigeria battled for supremacy in a dazzling showcase of speed, strength, and resilience.
Delta State swimmers continued their commanding presence in the pool. Akiyefa Timipamiere clinched gold in the senior women’s 50m backstroke, clocking 34.28 seconds, while Clinton Opute put in a powerful performance to win the men’s 400m freestyle final with an impressive time of 4:37.90.
In the senior women’s 50m freestyle, Lagos-based Chioma Kanu thrilled the crowd with her pace and composure, claiming victory in 28.06 seconds to loud cheers from the stands.
One of the day's most gripping moments came in the boys’ 100m breaststroke (13–15 years), where Edo State’s Tissa Precious edged his closest rival by milliseconds, winning in 1:20.06. He went on to double his gold medal tally with a sensational win in the 50m butterfly boys’ event, drawing a roaring ovation from the crowd.
Relay events added more energy to the evening, particularly the 4x100m mixed medley relay (15 years & under), where Delta’s team—comprising Olise Endurance, Ebigide Success, Aniasaba Jennifer, and Opute Joshua—stormed to gold with a commanding time of 5:20.77. Delta also topped the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, further cementing their reputation as the team to beat.
Young sensation Oluwatofunmi Ibidapo was once again in superb form, sweeping gold medals in both the 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly girls’ events (13–15 years), clocking 1:11.68 and 34.75 seconds respectively.
In a significant off-the-pool development, coaching certificates were awarded to graduates of the recent Southeast coaching course held in Awka, Anambra State. The certified coaches—Japhet Nwosu, Alozie Ikechukwu Emmanuel, Ejikeme Best, Adolphus Okere Ihechi, Obugo Cyprian, Jecinta Williams, and Onyebuchi Chukwuma—represent a crucial step in the Nigeria Aquatics Federation’s drive to enhance technical expertise and grassroots development.
With anticipation building ahead of Day 4, the championship continues to offer not only elite competition but also inspiration for the next generation of Nigerian swimmers and coaches.
