The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enter an exciting phase on Friday, July 24, as Day 2 delivers the first full programme of medal events following Thursday's opening ceremony. A total of 14 gold medals will be awarded across swimming, para swimming, para powerlifting and artistic gymnastics, while boxing and 3x3 basketball begin their competitions.
Para powerlifting will produce the first gold medal of the Games. Reigning Commonwealth champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin of Malaysia returns to defend his men's lightweight title against England's Mark Swan, whom he defeated at Birmingham 2022. Scotland's Finlay Davidson will also be in contention as he looks to delight the home crowd with an upset victory.
The swimming programme at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre promises one of the busiest evenings of the Games. Nine gold medals will be decided across swimming and para swimming events. Scotland's Duncan Scott targets the men's 200m individual medley title, while Stephen Clegg competes in the men's 100m freestyle S13 and Faye Rogers challenges for gold in the women's 200m individual medley SM10.
England's Adam Peaty begins his campaign in the men's 100m breaststroke, one of the day's headline races. The women's 400m freestyle is also expected to attract plenty of attention, with Australia's Lani Pallister and New Zealand's Erika Fairweather renewing their growing rivalry. Australia will also be among the favourites in both the men's and women's 4x100m freestyle relays.
Artistic gymnastics takes centre stage at The Arena, where the men's team final will award the day's only gymnastics gold medal. England will aim to secure a fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games men's team title, led by Luke Whitehouse. Hosts Scotland will field Hamish Carter, Pavel Karnejenko, Cameron Lynn, Connor Sullivan and Reuben Ward as they chase a podium finish in front of their home supporters. The competition also serves as qualification for the individual apparatus finals.
Boxing begins at SEC Hall 5 with preliminary bouts across several weight divisions. Scotland's Aaron Cullen meets India's Jadumani Singh in the men's 55kg Round of 32, while Indian hopefuls Preeti Pawar and Priya Ghanghas also launch their campaigns as the nation seeks another successful Games in the ring.
Bowls and para bowls continue their group-stage matches at SEC Hall 3 after an entertaining opening day. Scotland, traditionally one of the strongest nations in the sport, will look to build momentum in multiple singles and pairs events.
The 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball tournaments also get underway, with the Australia and England rivalry expected to provide one of the day's standout contests in both the men's and women's wheelchair competitions.
Although athletics competition begins on July 27, excitement is building after Team Scotland confirmed a star-studded squad featuring Laura Muir, Josh Kerr, Jake Wightman and Eilish McColgan. Their events later in the Games are expected to be among the biggest attractions of Glasgow 2026.
