Danish Underdogs Stun Seeds at Thailand Open as Gemke Reaches Quarterfinals

Posted : 16 May 2025

Two significant upsets occurred at the TOYOTA Thailand Open 2025 as the third seeds in both men’s singles and doubles were eliminated by unseeded Danish players. In the doubles event, William Kryger Boe and Christian Faust Kjaer stunned the higher-ranked Malaysian pair, Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee, in a tightly contested three-game battle.

Man admitted they were caught off guard by the Danes’ unfamiliar playing style and credited them for their superior execution and strategy.

Later in the day, Rasmus Gemke mounted a resilient comeback to defeat Chou Tien Chen in another three-game thriller. After dropping the first game, Gemke adjusted his pace and capitalized on his opponent’s fatigue, securing his first Super 500 or above quarterfinal appearance since the 2023 Denmark Open.

Gemke emphasized the importance of the win, especially after a series of close defeats, and highlighted how his previous victory over Jason Teh gave him the boost needed to overcome Chou.

Gemke’s 72-minute triumph sets up a quarterfinal clash against Loh Kean Yew, who cruised past Nhat Nguyen in straight games. Denmark's hopes remain strong in the men's singles draw, with second seed Anders Antonsen also progressing.

The 28-year-old overcame qualifier Tharun Mannepalli in straight sets to join his compatriots in the tournament’s later stages.
