Dakar 2026: Team Nigeria Begins Final Preparations for Youth Olympics

Posted : 23 October 2026

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has finalized Team Nigeria’s operational timeline and travel logistics for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. The historic tournament runs from October 31 to November 13 in Senegal. It marks the very first time an Olympic sporting event will take place on African soil.

Nigerian athletes will feature in six competitive sports across the two-week tournament. The sports include athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis, and beach volleyball. The commission introduced an operational schedule to streamline preparations and ensure top performance across all events.

The contingent undergoes an intensive 21-day local training camp in Abuja from October 9 to 29. The comprehensive program includes mandatory medical screenings, anti-doping seminars, tactical drills, and travel documentation processing. The team departs for Dakar on October 29 ahead of official venue inspections.

Team Nigeria arrives in Senegal on October 30 to complete accreditation and equipment checks. The official opening ceremony takes place at the Diamniadio Olympic Stadium on October 31. Both table tennis and beach volleyball fixtures begin that same afternoon.

Swimming actions kick off on November 1 at the Tour de l’Œuf complex. The boxing events will hold between November 7 and 12 at the Dakar Expo Centre. Athletics and road cycling races run on selected dates from November 8 through November 10.

The Games conclude on November 13 with the closing ceremony in Diamniadio. The sports commission noted that the operational structure aims to eliminate administrative delays and enhance grassroots development. The tournament provides young athletes a clear pathway toward elite international competition.
